Maya Garcia: Erich von Stroheim & the Soviet Union. Unfulfilled Attractions

Erich von Stroheim’s consideration of a move to the USSR in 1934 remains an intriguing and mysterious detail in the Vienna-born American filmmaker’s biography. His meeting with Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein in 1930, which laid the groundwork for the considered relocation, is also a little-studied curiosity.

Den König fallen lassen. Versuch über die Nebenfigur

Stefanie Diekmann

Theater and diplomacy have always had something in common: an ambiguous relationship to ›truth‹. This lecture explores the entangled histories of theater and diplomacy over the course of the long 19th century in Vienna, a city on whose cultural and political stages these twin arts of representation came increasingly to mirror and distort one another.

Malachi Hacohen: The Future of Jewish History. Catastrophe, Diaspora, and Exile

Recent Critiques of Zionism and Israel have highlighted the diasporic character of the Jewish people: the Jews have been a Diaspora for over 2500 years. Their current acceptance as citizens in nation states is a post-Holocaust exception, a blip on the historical screen. So is also the State of Israel.

Juan Rivera: Pluriverse and Relationality from an Andean Ethnographic Perspective

How does the adoption of concepts such as good living and Pachamama—earth being present as a cosmological figure—allow for an understanding of those worlds that live partly outside the separation between nature and humanity? Do they make it possible to think beyond the episteme of modernity? How can we find and describe those communal foundations of the social life of marginalized Indigenous peoples without the postulate of the existence of a homogeneous block of relational and nondualist worlds?

Heike Paul: Vom gelungenen Verzicht
